Accepting credit card guidelines
Small businesses that process payment need to set up a merchant account. Typically, you’ll agree upon costs, fees and features with a merchange account to accept credit cards. In this agreement, you’ll see a list of procedures and rules to protect all parties in the process.
Some small businesses charge a fee if the customer doesn’t spend a certain amount. If your business decides to accept credit cards, you are not allowed to determine a ‘floor limit’ and must take the card regardless of the dollar amount. Why is this common? People don’t complain. If your customer complains to his or her bank, the complaint will be sent down and you could be charged with a fine or even termination of the account.
Another common violation is when a busines charges a fee or surcharge in an attempt to offset the merchant fees. Commonly this is seen at gas stations. However, gas stations typically advertise the credit card amount and then will offer a ‘discount’ for those paying with cash which is okay.
The last common violation is when a busines only accepts certain credit cards. A business is not ‘technically’ allowed to turn away purchasing cards, rewards cards, etc. to prevent paying an extra fee. Some of those card types carry additional expenses with higher transaction amounts so most small businesses avoid accepting them. Merchants are required to honor all cards according to the guidelines and rules in the agreement.
If you are a small business and plan to start accepting credit cards, request merchant services price quotes before making a decision. Also, make sure you follow the correct guidelines when you do so. Accepting all credit cards with no extra charges will allow your customers to have a pleasant experience while doing busines and avoids any penalties or fees from your merchant account provider.
